Taking the plunge?

Currently have a job where I am a liaison for a hospice agency. Have a job offer to me to switch companies with time flexibility, doing the same thing and a nice base salary (100k + commissions/incentives).

I'm in my 40s and really considering getting into the insurance field. I don't have an "in" and haven't went after any licensing yet, though I have had some talks with a local independent with a solid local reputation.

My understanding is that to break in, you gotta start at the bottom and learn the business. The goal is after 3ish years or so, have enough business built up so I have the option of staring my own and join forces with the independent I was referring to before.

Am I totally off my rocker on considering this? Additional influences and scenarios to consider?
