Temporary housing during construction

My wife and I are building a ranch, the plan was to start the build this year, I'm a general contractor by trade so I'm doing a majority of the work myself, in order to not be stretched so thin I'm leaning towards building our garage and adding living space to the second story to 1. Give us living space during the build, and 2. Giving me a staging area for tools and supplies during the build. I'm interested in hearing thoughts on this and on the floor plan of both the house and the garage apartment.
