Best form of dishwasher detergent?

A post about dishwasher problems spurred a lot of comments suggesting OP change the detergent they use. So now I want to know - what form of detergent is best? Gel? Powder? Pod?

My dishes don’t always come out clean - my husband uses this detergent and tends to put in rather a lot. What would you suggest?
