What is your personal theory about G-man?

My theory is that he’s some sort of correspondent for a council made up of other races that are fighting against the Combine. Those would be his employers. He’s the type of person who believes “the ends justify the means.”

For example, he could have prevented the Combine from invading Earth if he wanted to. In fact, it’s even possible that he actively contributed to it. This is because he doesn’t care about the well-being of Earth or humanity as a whole; his focus is on the larger picture of the fight against the Combine. If the council deems it necessary for Earth to be invaded—whether to bring humanity into the war or to distract the Combine temporarily—G-Man will follow through with it.

This would explain why his actions are so hard to understand at first glance. We naturally focus on Earth and humanity’s survival, but his goals are tied to a broader agenda. For instance, in Episode 1, G-Man took Gordon, knowing that the Combine would likely return through the super portal. That’s because his plan wasn’t just about “liberating Earth.” It’s possible there was a simultaneous operation in other universes to weaken the Combine or divert their attention, with Earth being a pawn in the strategy (this is just an example).

This would also explain why he needs pawns like Gordon but not all the time—only when the council’s plan requires specific moves, like advancing pieces on a chessboard.
