Got a guitar from my dad but it's pretty old

My dad got me a guitar and we took it to my uncle who knows a lot more about the topic than either of us and he said that the strings had to get changed out and that the guitar was pretty dirty and I wanted to know if anyone could tell me if it would be a good idea to try to fix I my self as or just bring it to guitar center.
