would building a guitar be cheaper than buying one?

i've been thinking about building an electric guitar for myself recently, i have the tools. would the parts(excluding wood and paint) be more expensive in total than buying a new guitar? i know pickups are about a hundred(depending on what you get), but is that like the most expensive thing typically?
