Can I travel to Amsterdam with OV Chipkaart?

What it says above! All help appreciated!

I ordered a personal chipkaart but I’m confused as to how it works for intercity travel within the Netherlands - can I load it with a balance and then travel to Amsterdam by train from Groningen?
