Could parents name their first child after a brother or cousin? Details below
John Barrett married Jane Comer in 1836 in Morton on The Hill, Norfolk. George Barrett and Elizabeth Packam were the witnesses. George and Elizabeth married in 1839 in the same location.
In the 1841 census John and family were living in great witchingham (1.7 miles away from married place). I cannot find their 1851 census however
Their first son is named George James Littlewood Comer. James is Jane’s father’s name and Littlewood is the Jane’s mother’s maiden name. I thought George might be John’s father whereby the child bearing both grandparents forenames. However, I cannot find a baptism in the area of a John born to a George Barrett. A George Howell Barrett was baptised in 1813 in Great Witchingham, born to John Barrett and Ann Howell. But i don’t see any baptisms of the same parents of a John Barrett. So I can’t confirm whether George is a brother or a cousin.
In the case that George is it possible he named his first son after a brother or a cousin even though the middle name was the mother’s father’s name?
