Lead Mach 2 baitcaster problems

Got a Mach 2 recently and have been having some problems. Mid cast the line gets loose and birds nests. I have put the brakes up to the Max and the tension nob fairly tight. I set the tension knob so that the bait isn’t free falling but more of a guided fall. I have put many different types of line on it and no luck. I have multiple different bait casters and know how to thumb the spool and such. Any advice would be appreciated!
