Was I simply born too late?

My fiancé and I are both 23 and recent college graduates with business degrees from a reputable university. Together, we earn a combined $120k annually. Despite what feels like a solid starting point, it seems challenging to find jobs paying more than $60k-$70k a year unless you're in tech or sales. We are saving/investing about $30k a year after making extra payments on debt.

We have a small amount of student debt to pay off before we're ready to buy a home. Currently, we live in an area with high property taxes but are fortunate to rent a nice apartment for $1,000 a month—which feels like a rare deal these days.

We're probably a few years away from purchasing our first home, but looking at the current housing market feels discouraging. In our area, a decent home costs around $450k. We either don't make enough to comfortably afford a mortgage with just a 3.5% down payment, or it feels like it will take forever to save up a full 20% down payment. If it takes us five years to save $90k, housing prices might rise even further, pricing us out of the market entirely.

I can't help but feel defeated and wonder if I was simply born a few years too late to have a fair shot at homeownership. Is the American dream of owning a home gone for the non-wealthy? I'm not saying we MUST buy a house in the next few years, but it will be too expensive if things keep going the way they are.
