As a Film Student(23M) who wants to become a Director of Photography, I have very less knowledge of old films, Names of Directors and the years in which in the movies were made, nominated for what etc.

I get abit insecure and also at the same time wonder if I should start actively learning about older films as well as remembering all the director's names. I do however read up alot on Cinematography books and techniques. I always study the cinematography in every film I watch. It's just I usually forget who shot it or who the director was. I haven't studied the history of cinematography and to be honest even though I have tried, it is very painstaking. I like to learn on the go practically by doing things and trying new things. Learning about techniques from books, youtube and other DOPs I know. If I want to become a successful DOP though, Is this knowledge of films and film culture necessary to my success or is it not so crucial as of right now?
