Shady and Smart. Capable and Cunning. My absolute favorite types of characters.

I love characters who are dark, shady, sophisticated, and complex. Smart and capable. Sometimes the villain, sometimes the hero, but usually fall somewhere in between. Characters such as...

• Monza/Calder/Black Dow...basically anyone in the First Law series.
• Roose Bolton/Tywin Lannister/Euron Greyjoy in ASOIAF.
• Hilo in The Green Bone Saga.
• Tony Soprano, Gustavo Fring, Lalo Salamanca, Tommy Shelby (from TV).

Can anyone recommend some books in which characters such as these play a central role? It can be fantasy or non-fantasy. In fact, I've been trying to branch out of my much beloved fantasy genre so suggestions from outside would be much appreciated.
