My AI consulting experience was not what I thought it would be
Recently, I started freelancing as an AI consultant. I’ve built a lot of AI projects and have a good understanding of how to apply AI in a business context.
Maybe that’s why I was able to land two consulting jobs on Upwork. The pay wasn’t that great, but the experience taught me a lot about what the market actually needs.
People often think AI is everywhere, but I’ve noticed that small to medium-sized businesses are still running on very outdated systems. Forget AI—many haven’t even started using modern tech to make their work easier.
But this isn’t a rant. The real power of AI shows up when you first study how a business is currently running. Sales pipelines, lead generation, data management—you name it. These processes can be made so much more efficient with just a little AI and automation.
One of my recent consulting jobs was for a food delivery app. They wanted to improve their operations.
After going through their process, I suggested solutions for different tricky situations. They were honestly surprised to learn that most of the tools I mentioned already exist in the market.
It just shows how much of a difference even simple solutions can make.
I’m still learning and improving, but sometimes consulting turns into implementation. Clients often feel that since I understand both their problems and the solutions so well, I’m the best person to execute them too.
For example, a client recently asked me for a solution to build an AI-powered book generation tool. It had issues like limited context window and hallucinations. I spent a lot of time reading research papers and came up with a simple and clear solution. Now, the client wants me to build the entire thing.
This is fine, but it’s hard to scale when it keeps happening.
