Is this search for meaning in the Enneagram fruitful?
I’ve been seeing a trend in posts of people describe their psychological problems under the guise of it being an enneagram thing. The other day someone vented about how much they despise the neediness that comes from being a “6” (and hates themselves for it) or another user discussing how they isolate themselves from others and ask advice as a “9”.
When I see these posts I think about whether or not the enneagram as a tool for self-growth is truly all that helpful. I wonder if these labels actually provide any substance outside of simple accumulation of self-knowledge and an easier methodology to communicate your lived experience.
My main concern comes from people latching onto these abstract notions of character as an answer to their problems. From experience, obsessing over typology actually led to a a self-fulfilling prophecy where I deliberately manifested my way into acting whatever type I deemed at the time was most suitable.
Wouldn’t these issues of a lack of identity, neediness, loneliness, security etc. be better suited if addressed through a clinical or modern psychological approach? Is delving into the enneagram doing more harm than good because people could be dealing with their problems in a more refined and tested way?
