Difficulty Enjoying ES2

I love endless legend, and feel like I should love Endless Space, but I'm having a tough time getting into it. What are some perspectives you all have that might help engage me?

Rn a big issue for me feels like I just rush colonization techs and there isn't an interesting decision beyond the order to do that.
