"Misunderstood"

I have read the word misunderstood been used in two ways.

1) "His points were misunderstood by many in the audience." So there is a failure of understanding on the audiences part.

2) "He had a misunderstood appreciation for violence as a conflict solving tool." In this context, the word doesn´t seem to imply that his appreciation is misunderstood by others, but rather that his appreciation is based on some misunderstanding on the subjects part. Of course, with further elaboration, the meaning could "swing back" to be that his appreciation is indeed misunderstood by others. Anyways, I was about to explain this second way of using the word to another Norwegian, but couldn´t find any examples by googling. My question is simply if anyone can confirm that the word is used in this way.

Thanks in advance!
