Dog Still Has No Appetite 6 Weeks After Pancreatitis

On October 2nd she woke up and she was really sick (vomiting, drooling and lethargic and not eating) and we took her to our vet. She was on IV for a few hours and then came home but she was getting worse so we took her back and she went back on a drip and eventually he told us to take her to the hospital. The tests they did said she had pancreatitis and stayed there from Wednesday night / Thursday morning until Saturday afternoon and she was on anti nausea, appetite stimulants and anti biotics for a week after. Prior to getting sick she used to have hills ID wet food everyday at 16:00 and always had dry kibble out. She completely lost her appetite when she got sick and would only eat plain pasta and sweet potato after. We tried almost all wet food options the vet recommended, chicken, minced meat, eggs, tuna you name it.

She was 3.1 kgs and went down to 2.6kg. About two weeks ago she started vomiting etc again so I took her back to the vet and they put her on cerenia (anti naesea) remeron (appetite stimulator) and omeprazole for a week. He checked her pancreas and all other results were good. But I still wasn’t happy with her appetite change so I asked the vet to do external bloods. When those came back her vitamin B12 was below 50 (normal range is 350). She is now taking an injection of it once a week for 6 weeks (3 out 6 done). But her eating behavior is still not good.

We’re now 25 November and although all the other symptoms are gone, her appetite and eating are not improving. We’ve managed to get her onto dry kibble that the vet suggested (Royal Canine Hypoallergic for small dogs) that she likes but she will eat only roughly 20-30 grams a day (meant to be roughly 50grams) and I have to sit and beg for ages and hand feed her one by one. She won’t initiate eating on her own and will never ask for food. I even tried putting the pasta or a crushed treat in the food and she walks away.

She will always eagerly take her treats.

Is there anything you can suggest we do?

Also when she was on the remeron I still had to feed her by hand or put food on the floor and stand next to it and only very small amounts. And now she won’t always take the food by hand. I have to sit for a long time and often she will just walk away. I’ve tried having the food down and sitting with her for 15 minutes then lifting it. Doing this three times a day and she still only has about 20 grams.
