Advice for slowing down

I'm new to the 3d art world. I'm used to cranking out digital art in a few hours of hand cramping, eye straining labour. I've noticed an issue where I take the same approach to repaiting art dolls. Obviously this leads to uneven build up on my customs. What do you do to slow down and take a step back in your customization process?
