How I took apart and reassembled a g3 monster high doll.
Hi everyone! This is my first ever custom doll. Whenever I was researching, I was wondering if it was possible to completely dissemble a doll and reassemble. The only info I found was one image of a disassembled doll, but the OP hadn’t said anything by about if they could put it back together again.
Inspecting that one photo and my own dolls, I figured that since the leg and chest joints were purely ball and socket, that it would be simple to reassemble, and it worked with little to no damage to the joints.
DISCLAIMER: PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT WITHOUT KNOWING THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROCESS. THIS MIGHT BREAK YOUR DOLL OR COMPROMISE ITS JOINTS. I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL. I WAS VERY LUCKY THAT THIS WORKED.
Anyway, here’s what I did:
I started with a boiling water bath for a few minutes, and very carefully applied pressure to the leg joints backward and outward until they popped apart. I did the same for the chest, but it was a little more difficult to get a good grip.
After that, I did the painting and first couple of sealant coats.
Then it was time for the tricky part. I used a hairdryer to heat the areas that I needed to join, and quickly pressed them together until they popped in. Some paint did get scraped off during this. I did the same with the chest joint, but it did give me a little more trouble, like before. I think this is due to the angle that the chest joint is placed.
I let the newly-assembled doll cool, and I do not believe the joints sustained enough damage to be noticeable. I personally wouldn’t do this too many times to one doll because of the potential to loosen the joints too much. But ultimately I’m really happy with how this went.
I’m new to this sub and doll customs, so maybe this is common knowledge. But I couldn’t find anything about this topic when I was looking, so I hope this mini-guide helps others who are curious.
