Here is why you are all overreacting about how generic the new characters look (Effort Post)
Remember the OG Borderlands characters. Brick looks extremely bland. Roland is the most generic soldier of all time. Lilith is literally just lady. Mordecai was pretty unique but again nothing to write home about, yet they all turned out to be massive influences to the future of the franchise, and they all became memorable and interesting characters. So stop judging the new Vault Hunters, who don't even look that bad, from a couple of seconds of screen time
Let's talk about BL2 characters next, and subsequently, Presequel. Maya: copy of Lilith, expanded upon in BL3, but design wise, very simplistic. Axton: Copy of Roland, fleshed out in a few bits of dialogue from Presequel and BL3. Salvador: Horrible design, in my opinion, just a really bulky short guy with a beard. Zer0: Actually interesting, mysterious and enigmatic character, makes you wonder what's under the helmet, and why he has 4 fingers in each hand. Talks cryptically. Gets expanded upon in BL3, and is a main character in the story, good stuff. Krieg: Great character, the two voices in his head being polar opposites, yet they both agreeing on their goals is a great thing to experience. Design wise he is just a bandit unfortunately. Gage Up: Tiny Tina lite, Deathtrap is fun, but that's about it. Nisha: Done dirty in the story, but design wise, evil cowgirl dual wielding pistols and whipping people, fun. Wilhelm: beep boop beep cyborg boy, evil, single minded, meh. Skills changing his look and his voice is very fun though. Athena: Ancient Greek goddess with sword and shield that's shoots thunder and fire. Really cool, really fun. Design wise, too simplistic, doesn't reflect the gravitas of the character, but a highlight in Presequel. Handsome Jack aka Timothy: Very cool idea, looks exactly like handsome Jack (obviously) but the insecurity, and trying to live up to his (fake) name, really adds up. Aurelia: meh, stuck up, generic looking high class lady with ice powers, she gets her comeuppance in BL3, nothing remarkable about her. Claptrap: Annoying, humorless, soul draining, need I say more
And lastly BL3. Zane: Zane is the exception, where he is very well designed, visually at least, and he very much looks like what he is supposed to do in game, so no complain there. Amara: Not straying too far away from the Siren formula, but taking subtle Hindu elements and making her more musculine and angry. She is extremely simplistic visually, and does not convey all what she is supposed to be, to someone who doesn't know already about Sirens. FL4K is a robot beastmaster, yet if you just saw them for the first time, you would never have guessed that this is what they do, and the schtick with a robot in a trench coat has already been done before, even in the borderlands series, so they are. It unique at all. Finally Moze: Moze is somewhat over designed, having too much clatter on her outfit and not enough character, yet her actual lore is interesting and unique, being a former Vladof soldier, who now uses her mech for vault hunting, which you also would never have guessed from just her appearance.
Conclusion: Most of the borderlands characters throughout the games have been somewhat generic in design, yet recognisable and universally adored once people got familiarized with them through gameplay, and I am sure this same is gonna happen with the new Vault Hunters, thus we shouldn't be judging them so harshly just by few seconds of ingame footage, and zero lore, or even their names.
