Is Rare maybe ashamed now of Banjo-Kazooie?
Times have changed, and therefore our taste in humour as well. Rare was a very different company back then, with their hidden raunchy humour, silly cartoon characters, sexy women, goofy visuals and sound effects, and their childish, but still charming humour. But, that was the Rare from the past. The new Rare is more down to earth and the protagonists for their new franchises since are very normal looking humans. Do you think, that Rare might be ashamed, that they even created such a game like Banjo-Kazooie. It is not as controversial as Conker – they even said in a post, that they just can not make another game such as Conker today – but the Banjo-Kazooie series also has some concepts, that are not expected any more today:
- The burping and fart sounds
- The sometimes juvenile humour and word play
- The sometimes mean-spirted humour
- The maybe racist gibberish speech pattern of Mumbo and Humba
- Mumbo and Humba in general, because people might see them as offensive stereotypes
- The sexualisation of some female characters such as Humba and Game Over-Grunty
- Tooty being nothing more than a helpless damsel in distress
- The rock formation in Terrydactyland
- Lord Woo Fak Fak bleeding
- Lord Woo Fak Fak's name
- Jolly Roger being a gay stereotype
- Merry Maggie Malpass being a transgender stereotype
- The levels Mumbo's Mountain and Mayahem Temple being seen as racist offensive of other nations
- The menu items in Jolly's Tavern
- The mentioning words such as “queer” in an outdated context
Now, I'm not bothered by this at all, since I grew up with these games, but I can see that many people would not be found by some of these ideas any more.
