How do you get the Owlbear?

Hi all! Finished my first playthrough and about to start my durge run (not necessarily an evil run through just different). I read somewhere about people having the owlbear cub in their camp? I never saw this opportunity before? I got scratch and went in the Owlbear cave, didn't give the baby but the mother did die..

How do you get the cub or how else can the owlbear scenario play out?
