The famous 10/2 SSB build doesn't feel THAT strong. Am I stupid?
I've got Minthara set up with Prestigious Juice's popular Smiting Sword Bard build (https://www.reddit.com/r/BG3Builds/comments/18pxoy9/honor_mode_102_smite_swords_bard_ssb_complete/).
I had to try it after everyone heaps so much praise on it. And it IS good - I'm not necessarily here to bash it. It's just not living up to expectations compared to other equally praised builds like the 11/1 Sorlock or OH/TB Monk. I think I have it set up correctly - Shar's Spear, Hellrider Longbow, Helmet of Arcane Acuity, Bhaalist Armor, Gloves of Dex, Band of Mystic Scoundrel, etc. The only key item she isn't using is the Risky Ring because my gloomstalker assassin durge probably needs it more. She also has savage attacker and GWM feats and strength 20 (no hags hair so I had to stop at 20).
I try to play according to the strategy: turn off GWM, get as many hits as I can in the first turn to drive up arcane acuity, then use Command-Approach on as many enemies as possible. Then next turn I use Edge of Darkness and smite the crap out of everything.
The build is strong, don't get me wrong, but it's got nothing on the 11/1 Fire Acuity Sorcerer (by far the best build imo) or OH/TB Monk, or TB Throwserker, or even my gloomstalker assassin. But maybe I'm using it incorrectly. Here are my problems with this build:
Without stacking arcane acuity, this build is just a hard-hitting melee build. And it definitely hits hard. The combo of Shar's Spear, GWM, Savage Attacker, and Bhaalist Armor is great just by itself. But stacking arcane acuity so that the build also becomes a control build seems to be the key to bringing this build into the higher tier.
But stacking arcane acuity and setting up the right scenario is something I'm finding really difficult. Even with Haste and Oil of Accuracy, by the end of the first turn (when I need to use my bonus action to cast Command), I essentially never make it to more than 6 or 7 arcane acuity. And that's with an active Battlemage Elixir. And if I don't have enough AA to land my Commands, then the strategy falls apart. So the build requires that, when battle starts, I'm able to find a target that (1) is within movement range, (2) has low enough AC that I have high hit chances (yes, I turn off GWM and apply accuracy oil; I know the risky ring would help a lot on this issue), (3) is beefy enough to take 3-4 hits from this build without dying (that's pretty rare for minions), (4) is in a partially or fully obscured location or at least close to one, and (5) is in an area that is close to, and has visibility to a high number of other enemies that are within movement range of you so that Command-Approach is effective. All these conditions need to be true so that the full potential of this build is unlocked: stack AA, cast command-approach on 3-5 enemies, move to an obscured spot, wait for the next turn for them to approach, then hit them all with Edge of Darkness or Slashing Flourish and apply smites. Win.
But this perfect scenario just doesn't happen very often, if at all! I'm finding that even if I stack AA to the max, my Spell Save DC isn't high enough for Command to land on bosses or high-quality enemies. The whole strategy also takes two turns (or more if you need to cast Command Approach twice cuz the enemies are too far away or you need a second turn to stack more AA) whereas other DMG+Control builds like the 11/1 Fire Sorc can vaporize the entire battlefield on Turn 1 and have some actions to spare. OH/TB Monk has so many punches and so much mobility it can also clean house on Turn 1. My team right now has my gloomstalker assassin durge, OH/TB Monk Astarion, 10/2 SSB Minthara, and Shadowheart just hanging out to cast Haste and do things. By the time Minthara has finished stacking AA and casting Command on turn 1, my durge and astarion have cleaned everything up. Minthara is just taking way too long to get going - I'm finding that I'm better off just moving her to an enemy to apply Aura of Murder, letting my gloomstalker shoot her bow dealing double damage, then moving Minthara to the next target for my gloomstalker to pulverize, etc. She essentially runs around applying Aura of Murder and then uses the Shar's Spear to get a few hits in cuz why not.
So I gotta say this build has been feeling a bit disappointing. Am I missing something. Could I use her a bit differently to be more effective? Is the SSB better with a weaker surrounding cast where it gets a heavier carrying role? Discuss
