Would a “cool” therapist with drinks and different seating options make a big difference to you?
I’m studying psychology and thinking of becoming a therapist. I feel like I’ve never liked therapy because I don’t know what to do with my hands and wish I could like doodle or the therapist was paying attention but not just staring at me just to take some pressure off, at least in the first sessions. I hope one day to work specifically with girls with autism since were underserved right now.
Do y’all think it’d be cool and take the edge of if your therapist made you a cup of tea while you got through the basic getting to know you part of beginning sessions? Or would these extra actions just add mental load because there’s social interactions and niceties that you’d be too focused on to relax? Would an office with the choice of an L shaped couch, or a short Asian style table with pillow chairs, or just a variety of seating options help feel comfortable and less like a judge mental interview? Or would it just be stressful to have too many choices?
For example, I think it’d be a good idea, but maybe some of us would feel even worse because now you’re worried about whether or not they’re actually listening to you bc they’re busy doing something else.
Thanks for anyone who shares their opinions!
