When people say u compete with people in ur school, is it against the whole year or just based on ur intended major?

Like if I’m applying Econ and another kid is applying maths or smth would we be competing?

And if for example I applied to nyu stern, would I also compete against people from my school who try to apply to nyu tisch or only stern?
