How difficult to become RPA?

There are a ton of news stories from 2020-21 where the USAF said they were in desperate need of RPAs, that they were using contractors to pilot drones, etc etc. Is that demand still there -- and just as importantly, is the supply still not there? My son really wants to become an RPA, he's going to go through an AFROTC program, but I'm wondering his chances of getting the path he wants. (He has the idea that it's a slam dunk if that's your number one choice -- but I'm not so sure of that any more).
