Mossberg 151M(a) refinishing and stuff
So I gifted myself this old thing on my birthday and am in the slow process of refinishing it. So far the stock has 2 oil coat and already looks much better than it did when I got it. It looked like it had a couple varnish coats and a lot of that old walnut grain was hidden.
I need to redo the bluing, it's pretty freckled. I tested the buttplate and foreend band with some Tru Blu which does the job, but I'd like to go the more era accurate way and do a real rust blue process on it. That will take some time to get to that as I'd also like to make sure my sights are complete and factory. I believe the front sight is "aftermarket" and got added by cutting a small dovetail at the end of the barrel. Looking online I haven't seen a similar front sight and I'd like to go back to the factory one.
I'm also missing some bits on the open sight (middle) like the band that allows for distance zeroing and peep sight is also missing the peep and a few clips that holds it on there.. hopefully I find those parts in time.
Meanwhile I'm just waiting for a break in the snow fall to test the accuracy.
I've been wondering what's a normal peep sight setup on these. I've seen at least 2 different setup in a single picture showing 6 151M, Some with the middle open sight, some without and also I believe 2 different front sights but those may just be updates with the different revisions of the model. What do you all think?
One thing is for sure, it's lived a little over the past 76 years
